that I usually reforge and re-gem after getting any new gear, and run it
through Rawr for Sh@$ts and giggles to see what it says....

It depends on the fight. <---depends on the fight!) <----underscore...
On halfus that was mentioned - It was a 10 man...yes, you get the buffs,
food, etc, and yes Hero/Time warp was popped at the start, which is why
I got that incredible burst of 33K. Of course it dropped off on the
conserve phase, but I personally prefer the feel of arcane. It's sure
not about rotation (isn't much of one), but about managing cooldowns,
mana, mana gems, PoM. etc...and because I knew Time Warp/Hero was popped
from the start, I adjusted to make sure I got my evocate in before it
ended, thereby getting a second small second burst phase before
conserving, as I evocated so fast that I still have 4 stacks of AB on
when I started dps'ing again at 100% mana.
I equate arcane and fire specs, to healing on a my resto druid as
opposed to a priest....Heals, but very different in how. I dropped to
about 16K during my conservation phase, then back up to about 23-24K
without the hero/time warp buff on the next burn. As far as placement
on a dps chart, don't care and are splitting crumbs at this point, but
if you want to know, it was still on top at the end, but by only a
little over 1K. Hunters were right behind me. And sorry - The fire
mage was a little over 4K below that. Once again, it's the fight,
knowing your spec's capabilities and downfalls, in my humble opinion.
Halfus this week was Nether, Slate and Storm, (one of the worst combos I
think) One tank took the boss, the other picked up Nether and Slate, and
burned down slate first. Leaving Storm alone, you get the knockbacks,
so I was able to plant my butt against a wall and hammer away....not a
lot of movement until Halfus. Now on Magmaw, for example, if I went
arcane, the fire mage would kick the crap out of me. I however would go
fire on that fight, as the only AoE I have in Arcane is Explosion which
requires me to be close, and the last place you want to be is near the
worms that have to be AoE's down.
I enjoy the spec, and if played right, and used on the right fights, it
is not only viable, but pretty damn good, despite what is said. It's
not that it's bad, just that it has it's place...Like choosing the best
tool for each job, as opposed to a swiss army knife spec that one tool
does all.
I don't bother with fire outside of raids now at all. Fights are
getting so quick in Heroics, it's starting to feel like Wrath runs and
mobs are going down so quick from other players, that by the time I get
my living bomb and flame orb launched, they are at least half gone. I
play my arcane with it's burst damage so I feel I can contribute more.
But I hate when people say the spec sucks. I say it has it's
challenges, instead. Could it use improvment? Absolutely! I can't
wait for the changes coming up! I hate comparing to others, but only to
myself, however I have gotten 3 other mages in a lot better/higher
raiding guilds checking out arcane as a viable offspec for a "less
movement" fight after running BH on pugs.
These are just of course my humble opinions...no slams needed. :)
