I have studied onomastics for many years as well as genealogy AND heraldry. I hardly ever use any other source but my own hard head. I am an adjunct member of the English College-of-Arms in Great Britain which helps my background knowledge.
I do of course observe both patronymic and matronymic monikers when choosing what name for what sex though! :)

Here goes one...what methodology do you use when you pick names for your toons?
Do you use the randomizer WoW provides? Do you choose for comedy? Do you use movies?
I personally prefer to use mythology of all cultures, modern and ancient.
Cyhiraethia is my mage...I planned on a frost mage so named her after the Celtic goddess of streams
Nanaja is my DK...named after the Sumerian goddess of death and decay.
Gaia is my druid...named after the greek Mother Earth.
Baloria is my priest...which I intended to make shadow...named after Balor...the evil eye.
Exceptions from the mythology...
Markotheron...is my hunter...his name comes from two gypsy names...Marko which means warlike and theron which means hunter
My shammy started out as a male drenai...hewas named kronkk...if you ever watched a male drenai walk...then kronkk makes perfect sense lol
When I did the faction transfer to horde, as a troll shammy...I named him Chakasulu...after voodoo/african warrior Shaka Zulu...the jamaican flavor and "voodoo" talk of the trolls made it seem appropriate.
And dont even get me started on hunter pets...lol...I have reasons for all my pet names.
