DsiWare Dragon's Lair trailer is totally retro

You don't often get a nostalgic trailer to herald the arrival of a DSiWare game, but then, you don't often get a DSiWare game with the retro pedigree of Dragon's Lair. Yes, the famous adventure of Dirk the Daring is heading to Nintendo's portable download service, and it's just as you remember it!
Despite the fact that this is an ancient game that probably isn't even very good these days, it's the first DSiWare game I've cared about, so I may go ahead and spend my free DSi points on it. What about you? Fancy getting your arcade groove on, or will you give this old timer a rest?

2K Sports sure seems to be struggling right now. In the wake of Thursday's announcement that parent company Take-Two expects to post a loss of $137.9 million this year -- which is largely the fault of poor performance from 2K Sports' baseball games -- comes a rumor that the next installment in the publisher's hockey series, NHL 2K11, may have been axed.
Yesterday, Pastapadre noticed that NHL 2K11 was nowhere to be found on Take-Two's Q4 fiscal 2009 results in the section of games that the publisher is currently planning to ship in 2010. (Both MLB 2K10 and NBA 2K11 are listed on the report.) Chris Littman at The Sporting News' FirstCuts blog asked 2K Sports for comment, and this is what a PR rep told him:
That's a damning statement if I've ever seen one. Littman pointed out that if NHL 2K is no more, the franchise appears to be dying the same death as the publisher's College Hoops 2K series. After College Hoops 2K8 released in November 2007, the company remained quiet on the future of the franchise before announcing in January 2008 that it had ended negotiations with the Collegiate Licensing Company (which, as you may have guessed, controls licensing for college sports) and would not be making any more College Hoops games.
Hit the jump for some more thoughts on what this could mean for 2K Sports.

Clash of the Titans looks like what you'd expect

How do you all feel about the new Clash of the Titans film? I couldn't really say either way. I'm excited, sure, but that's mostly due to my love of Greek mythology, not the quality of the film. Liam Neeson as Zeus? Yeah, that'll be hard to screw up. Count me in, I suppose.
The Clash of the Titans game, however ... I have my mind made up on that one already. Movie tie-ins, no matter how good they may appear to be initially, are going to get the pessimistic treatment from me until release. This action-adventure take on the upcoming film is no exception.
Last we heard, the game was set to have more than one-hundred different enemies. Today, Namco Bandai gave us a bunch of screenshots with a few new details. Locations apparently include "swamps, mountains, and the underworld." Also, we'll be playing as Perseus. Whoa, guys! Don't spoil too much, here!
About the one good thing this game has going for it, based purely on these images, is a decent art style. I'm liking the color palette, which is good, because the graphics aren't all that nice. Still, I'm more than ready to see what Clash of the Titans looks like in motion.

New Hellion: Mystery of the Inquisition screens

Here are some new Hellion: Mystery of the Inquisition screens to repent over. If you read other blogs, you may not have heard about this game because it seems that I'm the only writer who gives even a vague crap about the thing. Anyway, go look at the pretty pictures.
Hellion is a first-person game set in the 13th Century and involves a lot of interesting religious stuff. You play a member of the inquisition who deals with all sorts of screwed-up demonic matters. Exorcism is his trade, and the game is full of historical references and characters to meet along the way.
Sounds like a really promising and unique premise. Not that anybody seems to care.

Next Wednesday is going to be one phenomenal day for fans of Trials HD. Both the "Big Pack" add-on (400 Microsoft Points) and a free title update are going out then, and each looks to be doing some interesting things to change up the game.
The "Big Pack" downloadable content is packed full of stuff. We're getting 35 additional tracks, most of which are medium and hard difficulty levels; plus 23 racing tracks, made up of 12 medium, 9 hard, and 2 extreme. There's also 12 skill game tracks, 5 tournaments, and 50 physics objects.
New Achievements:
Yeah, I'm pretty much sold on this thing. You guys too? Make sure to check out what the update does by clicking through past the break.

Time travel, boats, and other scrapped Burnout DLC ideas
2 hour ago - 7:20 PM on 12.18.2009, Jordan Devore

When it comes to downloadable content on consoles, Criterion Games is leading the way. Taking a fun game (Burnout Paradise) and then significantly expanding it to the point where the original concept is unrecognizable is not something many studios are willing or able to do. But they did it.
Now that Criterion is off working on other things, the team has let loose some rather great ideas for Burnout Paradise add-ons that our eyes will likely never get to witness. Any dedicated Burnout fan will tell you planes were at one point going to be an actual thing -- this is only the beginning of the madness.
Another proposed add-on was taking the action to the Moon, literally. How fun would zero gravity racing be? Tons, I bet. Criterion also humored such ideas as boats, helicopters, underground tunnels, motorcycles versus cars, a series of islands (each with a distinct racing style), and even time travel. Yes, time travel.
"On a certain day, a time portal would have opened on the Island. When you jumped through, you would have found yourself on Big Surf, at another point in history. Maybe the Wild West ... you could have done some Challenges and then jumped back." I need this to happen!

Hey, do you happen to remember when the first Megaman Zero game was touted as the "hardest Megaman game ever" way back when? I've played it. It's not really that bad -- there's a lot to be said about the options to make the game hard or easy, like trying to consistently get A/S ranks in every mission on the side of hard, or using as many of the Cyber Elves to give you more health and whatnot on the side of easy. I remember this being a big deal at the time, though afterwards there wasn't much said on the issue as a whole.
Didn't anyone play Megaman 2, though? Did people forget the impossibility of beating Air Man? Or even getting through his stage? Okay, okay, but seriously.
One of the things that bothers me with games today is the allure of difficulty. "I beat [game], and that makes me feel good." Now, I can understand that. Who doesn't want to beat a difficult game? Where I draw the line is how justified that difficulty is. Now, as I said, I like a good challenge. But when it's controller-tossingl

2D zombeat-'em-

I'm becoming increasingly impressed with the French indie scene, and not only because my last name is Leray. Joining Meckensleep (Soul Bubbles) and Golgoth Studios (awesome-looking Toki and Joe & Mac remakes) as purveyors of gorgeously-animated 2D games are Press-Start Studios, whose Twin Blades will hit the Xbox Live Indie channel this Christmas.
In Twin Blades (the name is the worst thing about the game), you play as a B. B. Hood-inspired nun tasked with protecting her village from a zombie invasion. I know, I know, zombies are played out, but I'm guessing the game started development before the zombie-craze hit the games industry. Or maybe notPress-Start, located in Strasbourg, was founded only this year.
Anyway, the game is very nicely animated and I really dig the tunes. I'm kind of worried about the gameplay, though. On the one hand, there's a chance that the gun-and-scythe combos will lead to a Shank -style beat-'em-up; there's also a chance that shooting mindless zombies might get old. On the bright side, the ice gun upgrade (near the end of the trailer) is really cool, and I like the idea of some RPG-lite elements to mix things up.
Anyway, Twin Blades is already out on the iPhone and seems to be pretty popular in Japanit's sitting pretty at ninth on the Japanese App store. The game will cost you 240 Microsoft bananadollars, but Press-Start promises free DLC.

Torchlight gets Steam Achievements, price slash
3 hour ago - 6:26 PM on 12.18.2009, Brad Nicholson

Runic Games's Torchlight is one of the slickest and most colorful action RPGs this side of Sacred 2: Fallen Angel. I've spent hours upon hours inside of its labyrinthine innards, scavenging loot and scouring all the while pitting my golems of doom against the things who lurk in its dark depths. If you haven't been, now is the best time to do so: the game is $9.99 on Steam.
If you do have it, there's still reason to rejoice. According to an official release sent out just minutes ago, Torchlight has been updated with Steam Achievements and Cloud support. So, now your level 25 Alchemist can travel to any PC and earn silly rewards. Yes, please!

Wii Remotes in Blue, Pink, coming soon

GamePro says that Blue and Pink are coming as early as next week, just in time to accessorize for the holidays. If you already have four, then it's kind of hard to think about getting other colors. You could always sell one or two off, but you'd really have to like the new colors to do that.
In related news, according to Network World, there's no news on the Black Wii or Wii Classic Controller Pro yet.

Art Attack Friday: TheBourgyman

Art Attack Friday is your weekly look at videogame fan art created by a talented artist.
Today we're looking at the antics of TheBourgyman. Bourgyman's videogame related art focuses heavily on the Super Mario universe. From Prince Peach and Daisy harassing Rosalin, the Koopa Kids being up to no good, to Mario gaining Beaver powers -- Bourgyman simply loves Mario and company.
My favorite of Bourgyman's work is his 21 years of bosses and the mistaken Shine Get piece. It's always fun looking at images where Mario is about to get destroyed by all of the bosses he has ever fought (that would make for a great new Mario game concept, actually.)
Check out Bourgyman's deviantART for all of his art collection.

New Just Cause 2 trailer reminds us the game has a story
3 hours ago - 5:40 PM on 12.18.2009, Nick Chester7 comments
We've been seeing so much about Just Cause 2's crazy ass stunts and wild explosions that I nearly forgot that it had a story.
Well, this video is a reminder, and it has something to do with a president and... oh sh*t, did you see that tank explode and that thing fall down!? That was sick! Oh, wait... where was I again? Oh yeah, the game's story. I don't know. It involves some dude with a gecko on his shoulder, I think. Also, Rico Rodriguez has ditched the mullet he was sporting in the first game, so I'm sure that's part of the story arc, too.
I guess what I'm getting at is that I don't really care what the story is in Just Cause 2. If it can muster up enough narrative to justify why I would fly a jumbo jet or attach a statue to a moving car, then that's fine with me. The game comes out next year for Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, and PC. I can't wait.

Lunar: Silver Star Harmony gets CD soundtrack, bonuses

XSEED is busy prepping their upcoming PSP game, Lunar: Silver Star Harmony, for release early next year. They send along news of a Limited Edition version of the game, which will include several goodies that are sure to please long time Lunar series fans. I'm one of those fans.
You'll want to get out and pre-order this limited edition, which will include a soundtrack CD and a set of 13 exclusive "bromide" collector cards highlighting the girls of Lunar. Remember the bromide collectibles? How cool is that?
Lunar: Silver Star Harmony, with its new localization, new soundtrack, battle system and graphics, will be released in Q1 of 2010, for $29.99. The Limited Edition listed above will be priced at $39.99. I am definitely getting the Limited Editions, which will sit proudly alongside my copies of the Sega CD and PS1 versions I have.
Check out some new screens as well as more images of the Limited Edition in our gallery below.
