As you'd expect, Fishing allows a character to hone their hunting skills and enables you to fish for fish and other things lurking in the watery depths. You can consume some items in their raw form or cook (if you've trained in cooking) for increased benefits. The food can be used by hunters for their pets and you can even fish out reagents useful to alchemy and chests with goodies hidden inside.

Fishing is a Secondary Gathering Profession and does not count towards your 2 primary profession limit.

What do I need and how do I fish?

After you have learned fishing you will need to buy a [Unknown Item: Fishing Pole] from a Supplier. Now find a body of water that will fit your fishing skill. If you just started to learn fishing, you will need to use water in a low level area. When you are facing the water, you will need to equip the Fishing Pole in order to be able to fish (this is different than Mining, where you just need to have the Pick in your backpack). Your weapon will need to be put in your inventory. You can drag the fishing skill icon from you Skill Book (Press P to open) to one of your action bars so you can access it more easily.


To cast, you left click on the fishing icon. A fishing bobber with a couple of feathers on top will be cast at some random location close to you in the water you are standing near. If you get the message "Your cast did not land in fishable water", you should make sure your character is really facing the water, or move closer. Some (but very few) waters are not fishable. When you manage to throw the bobber, a small timer gauge will appear at the bottom of the screen, similar to when you're casting some spells. The timer shows how long the bobber stays in the water. Hold you cursor over the bobber and wait.


When you see a splash around the bobber right click on it and the catch will either get away or you will be successful (depending on what waters you are fishing, and your fishing skill). If you did catch a fish, a loot box will pop up showing what you have caught. If you hold the Shift key down, or use the setting "Auto Loot" in the Interface Settings, when you click the bobber, then any items you might fish up will automatically go to your bags. If you are a significantly higher level in Fishing than required for the location you're in you will have longer to click the bobber, and it's harder to get a catch with lower skill level.



There's not much else you can do in the game while fishing. You can't use the ingame chat because you need to be ready to click the bobber when it splashes. Of course you can't do that if you're typing a message to someone. Suggested activities include using Team Speak, Ventrilo or the ingame voice chat to talk to friends or skip that and listen to music. A great tip is to use normal waiting times for fishing, such as waiting for member to arrive at your instance, or waiting for a boat at one of the ports.


You do need a lot of patience for this trade, so a tip to make it feel less of a chore is to set yourself "fishing durations" that last as long as your bait does ( about bait). If you play for a few hours at a time you can aim to have one or two 10 minute sessions. Your skill will soon level up and you won't feel as if you're grinding it.

What things can I catch?

 

Fishing for trouble?
The most common thing you will catch is fish, unsurprisingly. Still, there is more to fishing than immediately meets the eye. The items you can catch while fishing are:

• Fish of all kinds
  • You can cook some fish to get additional benefits or use as food to some of the Hunter's pets.
  • There are some humorous uses for fish as well, such as a [Unknown Item: 32 Pound Catfish], that you can wield like a weapon (but you can't use it as a weapon). Smelly yet stylish.
  • There are "bloated" fish, like [Unknown Item: Bloated Trout], which when right clicked can contain treasure.
• Clams - Clams, like [Unknown Item: Big-mouth Clam], will contain clam meat to cook, and can also contain pearls that can be used for many professions, like Blacksmithing, Leatherworking, Tailoring or Jewelcrafting.
• Crates [Unknown Item: Heavy Crate], or other types of crates can contain other items such as [Unknown Item: Solid Blasting Powder], [Unknown Item: Mithril Casing] or [Unknown Item: Goblin Rocket Fuel] to name but three. Some of these will be locked and will require either a Rogue (to Unknown spell: Pick Lock) or a Blacksmith (to make keys like [Unknown Item: Golden Skeleton Key]).

• Trouble caught!
• Bottled Messages - You may also fish up a [Unknown Item: Message in a Bottle], which has a chance of having a recipe, pattern or scroll in them.
• Trade Goods - [Unknown Item: Essence of Water] in Azshara and [Unknown Item: Mote of Water] Nagrand.
• Rare Items - Sometimes you just get a good item directly, such as [Unknown Item: The 1 Ring], [Unknown Item: Steelscale Crushfish], [Unknown Item: Rockhide Strongfish] or the fabulous [Unknown Item: Mr. Pinchy].
• Bosses - can only be found if you have been fishing [Unknown Item: Zulian Mudskunk] as bait, and will be awaken by excessive fishing in his pool.

Your skill has no impact on the type of fish or loot you catch, that is zone dependant. You will be level 375 fishing and still never get anything but [Unknown Item: Raw Longjaw Mud Snapper], [Unknown Item: Raw Bristle Whisker Catfish] or [Unknown Item: Raw Brilliant Smallfish] when fishing in Stormwind.


The loot you can get from fishing increases in quality as you fish in more difficult waters, obviously requiring higher fishing skill. If interested, you should read the FULL LIST of all items you can get by fishing.

What can I do with the things I catch?

Well, lots of things you can consume immediately but you are much better off Cooking the fish first for greater benefits. For instance, take a common low level fish, the Catfish:

Raw:

Cooked:

• [Unknown Item: Bristle Whisker Catfish] Restores 552 health over 21 sec.

It becomes an even bigger difference at higher levels. After level 60 it is more and more common to gain temporary buffs if sitting and consuming cooked fish (and other types of food) for 10 seconds or longer. The [Unknown Item: Golden Darter] will turn into [Unknown Item: Golden Fish Sticks], which is excellent if you are healing. Most raiding guilds require the members to have these "food buffs" in order to be allowed in the raid. So train as a cook. Cooking is a secondary profession and therefore does not count towards your 2 primary profession limit. If you can't be bothered with Cooking you can just eat it raw or sell it on to a vendor.


You'll not get much money for them from a vendor though (even cooked), a few silver max. Fishing and just selling to vendors isn't a route to riches, that's for sure. However, Fishing combined with Cooking will enable you to sell those food buff delights for tonnes of gold on the Auction House! So there is potential to make some money from fishing if you combine it with some other profession. Besides Cooking, you can also benefit from Fishing from other professions as well.

Fishing Uses for Other Professions

• Alchemy - Used in elixirs (like [Unknown Item: Elixir of Giant Growth], from [Unknown Item: Deviate Fish]) and to make oils (like [Unknown Item: Fire Oil] from [Unknown Item: Firefin Snapper]) that in turn are used in Alchemy recipes such as [Unknown Item: Elixir of Firepower].
• Blacksmithing - Pearls fished up from clams (such as [Unknown Item: Iridescent Pearl]) can be used to make plate armor such as [Unknown Item: Shining Silver Breastplate].
• Cooking - Usead heavily to gain skill in cooking, as well as creating food that buffs you, like [Unknown Item: Golden Fish Sticks] made from [Unknown Item: Golden Darter]s.
• Enchanting - The [Unknown Item: Iridescent Pearl] is used for [Unknown Item: Runed Golden Rod], the tool Enchanters must have to do their work, and to upgrade for higher levels.
• Engineering - Items found in crates, such as [Unknown Item: Goblin Rocket Fuel], is used for making items such as [Unknown Item: Mithril Mechanical Dragonling].
• First Aid - No uses for Fishing with First Fid (naturally, who wants a fish bandage?).
• Jewelcrafting - [Unknown Item: Jaggal Pearl]) can be used for creatirm items such as [Unknown Item: Crown of the Sea Witch].
• Leatherworking - [Unknown Item: Iridescent Pearl] can also be used to make [Unknown Item: Gem-studded Leather Belt].
• Tailoring - The [Unknown Item: Iridescent Pearl] is used for items such as [Unknown Item: Spidersilk Boots].

How do I Improve my Fishing skill level?

It's popular belief that if you divide your fishing skill by 5 you should be fishing in an area where mobs are round about that level. So if you have a fishing skill of 100, that would mean you would be best suited to fishing in an area populated by level 20ish mobs. As your fishing skill level increases you will be able to fish successfully in higher level areas. If you try to cast your line into water in an area too high for you you will get a message to say "you're not sufficiently skilled enough to fish" there. If you are able to cast your line into an area somewhat higher than your skill level you are less likely to catch anything and will receive the 'your fish got away' messages more often.


Your fishing skill level does not determine what you can catch in any area, it determines if you will catch. Each area has certain fish and items that can be fished. That list of items isn't affected by your fishing skill level, it's the same for every fisherman. However, higher skill means more chance of catching something from that list, lower level skill means less chance, and much lower skill level means you'll get the above message.


You can skill up your fishing from 1 to 375 in any fishable body of water at your level. This means you can stand in Stormwind all day long and get skillups on your fishing at the same rate as you would in a higher level zone. What decides your skillups is the number of successful catches.


From level 1 to 75 you will get a skillpoint on pretty much every successful catch, this will decrease as your skill gets higher and from 300 to 375 you will need to do more than 10 successful catches for each skill point gained. The following equation gives a rough estimate:

(Current Fishing Skill - 75) / 25 = Rough number of successful catches for a skill-up. So:

(250 - 75) / 25 = 7 fish caught to get 1 skill

If your fishing skill is no longer increasing in level when you catch something check that you have not reached the the max level cap for your rank. If you've reached the cap seek a trainer and train to the next rank.

• Apprentice - Up to fishing skill Level 75
• Journeyman - Up to fishing skill Level 150
• Expert - Up to fishing skill level 225
• Artisan - Up to fishing skill level 300
• Master - Up to fishing skill level 375

Once you reach 375 your skill will not increase by fishing although it can be raised by equipment and bait. In the end you will have to catch about 2000 fish to get from start to finish.

Fishing Skill Upgrades

There are a number of ways you can temporarily increase your Fishing skill, enabling you to roam other, more profitable, waters for fish or treasure. You can upgrade to a better pole, have a pair of gloves imbued with a fishing bonus by an Enchanter or buy bait to apply to your rod. Some improvements are more temporary than others.


Any bonus you receive from equipment will of course only count as long as you have them equipped, and bait will only last for a couple of minutes, normally. Either way, these additions are great ways of increasing the range of waters you are able to fish, and gain food or loot from, as well as increasing your chances of getting a catch in lower level waters.

You should note that the timer on your bait will continue to count down even if you unequip the fishing pole and put it in your bag. Hover over your bait icon next to the minimap to see how long you have left on your bait.

Are there any Mods/UIs that will help me fish?

Bots that fish for you are illegal and use of them could result in your account being banned by Blizzard. However, a mod that is not illegal is Fishing Buddy. Features include:

• 'Fish Watcher' lets you see the fish you've caught here before (or the fish that you've caught in the current session)
• Display your current skill level and the time since you started fishing
• Choose your fishing outfit and change into it easily
• Simplified casting support (right click to cast, fast recast)
• Support for automatically adding a lure to your fishing pole
• Preliminary support for tracking 'cycle fish' such as the Nightfin Snapper so you know when to go looking for them.

Relevance of when you fish

There are two seasonal fish that we know of [Unknown Item: Raw Summer Bass] and [Unknown Item: Winter Squid] and when cooked both have bonuses to their health benefits. Summer Bass only caught in the summer months can be cooked into [Unknown Item: Hot Smoked Bass] and gives a +10 boost to Spirit for 10 minutes whereas the [Unknown Item: Winter Squid] can be cooked into [Unknown Item: Grilled Squid] gives +10 to Agility for 10 minutes, so particularly handy for Rogues. The time of day can also affect what you fish, for example, in an area you would fish [Unknown Item: Raw Nightfin Snapper] at night time, you will catch [Unknown Item: Raw Sunscale Salmon] in its place during the day you will catch.

How do I train to higher levels of fishing?

Expert - Via a Book

As with the other two secondary skills higher levels are not achieved through regular training. To become Expert you'll need to purchase a book for 1 gold from in Booty Bay. Follow the pier around to the right, don't go up the ramp, carry on, then go down the next ramp and Old Man Herring's 'The Happy Bobber' shop is right in front of you. Simple as that.

Artisan - Via a Quest

To achieve Artisan fishing rank you will need to complete a quest. Remember, you must be a character level of 35 and posses a fishing skill of 225 or above (without bonuses) before you can begin either of these quests below.

Horde

Seek out , in the Valley of Honor in Orgrimmar . He will issue you with the quest which sends you off to see in Dustwallow Marsh.

Alliance

Seek out , in the Forlorn Cavern of Ironforge . He will issue you with the quest which sends you off to see in Dustwallow Marsh.

Both

From here on it's the same for characters from both Factions. will issue you with the quest that calls for you to fish for 1 each of the following fish in the locations listed. The co-ordinates listed are one of the co-ordinates that you can catch fish. Take [Unknown Item: Aquadynamic Fish Attractor]s with you to ensure you have the highest possible skill in fishing.


If you have a Skill level of 225 fishing, you probably don't need a bait. The fish "droprate" varies, but it can be very quick if you are lucky.

You need the quest in order to catch any of these fish. They will not spawn for you without the quest.

Master - Via a Book

To become a master at fishing you need to go to Zangarmarsh , Outland and seek out a vendor named Juno Dufrain. He is situated just south-east of Cenarion Refuge, by the water, and sells the book [Unknown Item: Master Fishing - The Art of Angling] for a mere 5 . You can learn this book at level 45, fishing level 275 and it gives you the ability to train fishing up to level 375.

Fishing Ingame Events

There are events ingame that is only available to fishermen. That includes daily quests as well as a weekly event.

Daily Fishing Quests

Every day you have the chance of gaining gold and great loot from your fishing skill with the Fishing Daily Quests. They start with , and can send you anywhere from Stormwind to Shadowmoon valley to catch your fish. You can gain items such as:

Stranglethorn Fishing Extravaganza

The Stranglethorn Fishing Extravaganza is a grand event set along the coasts of Stranglethorn Vale and ending in Booty Bay. Every Sunday (between 14:00-16:00 server time) the shout will ring out across Stranglethorn Vale to bait your hooks and cast your lines! Here are some goodies you can get, besides fame and gold:

Fishing Tips

While fishing

• Each cast of fishing will result in a splash of the blobber. The splash usually occurs when there are around 13, 7 or 3 seconds left of the Fishing channeled "spell". Use that information to be more prepared.
• Use the sound to your advantage! In most areas it's often easier to hear the splash effect than to stare at the blobber.
• Zooming to first person perspective will keep the bobber in your field of view at all times, giving you some extra cast control.

Doing other things

• You can't sit while fishing in a regular fashion, except if you have the special [Unknown Item: Fishing Chair] you can get from the WoW Trading Card Game.
• You can /sleep while fishing.
• You can not be in water deeper than you can in bottom (ie: no "swimming" or treading water).
• You can't be in stealth.
• If you are attacked you will be interrupted.
• Use a macro to equip your weapons if you get attacked while fishing.
• You can access your various inventory screens, it won't interrupt your cast, but if you are fiddling around with those you need to keep your ears alert for the splash sound so you can click on the bobber to land your catch.

Looting

• If you have Auto Loot off on your client, you can press and hold your shift key when you right click the bobber to move catched fish directly to your bag. If Auto Loot is on, fish will automatically end up in your bags.
• If bags are full, the loot window stay open until you close it yourself (or have emptied bags and put fish in there).
• These have no use other than allowing you some bragging rights when you're next loitering around town.
• The best fishing pole you can get without actually winning the Stranglethorn Fishing Extravaganza, [Unknown Item: Nat Pagle's Extreme Angler FC-5000] is Horde only.

Rest Bonus & Fishing

• If you try to skill up your fishing while in cities, you'll also receive rest bonus.

Other Information

• Fishing not possible to "unlearn" like Primary Professions. It is a Secondary Profession and you can have all three (Cooking, First Aid, Fishing) there is no need to have an unlearn feature.

To recap on basics of Fishing

• Need to be character level 5 to begin training
• Training in fishing costs money
• Books cost money (some drops/rewards)
• Must stand while fishing
• Fishing poles need to be equipped in your primary weapon hand
• Can't unlearn
• Hold shift key down while right clicking bobber will move loot to bag
• You can add baubles (temporary enchantments) to your fishing pole to temporarily raise your fishing skill, enabling you to fish in higher level areas.
• Higher fishing skill allows you to fish in higher level areas. It doesn't affect what's available to catch there, that is the same for everyone regardless of level.
• Fishing skill level determins if you can catch, and how easy it is to get a catch, not what items are available to catch.

Artisan Fishing Guides for Alliance and Horde

Requirements To Begin Artisan Fishing Quest:

You must be at least level 40 and have your expert fishing skill maxed out at 225 in order to recieve this quest. Be sure to have plenty of silver for all of the traveling you'll be doing.

NOTE: There is a known bug that will keep you from skilling up after receiving Artisan Fishing if you leave the area. After finishing the Artisan Cooking quest, be sure to fish your skill up to 226 before leaving Nat Pagle.

Alliance Start:
Speak with Grimnur Stonebrand in Ironforge (The Forlorn Cavern)

Horde Start:
Speak with Lumak in Orgrimmar (Valley of Honor)

Both will tell you to speak to Nat Pagle, who is SW of the Alliance city of Theramore Isle. Nat Pagle is located at 58.59. For Horde, the closest city is Brakenwall Village. Nat Pagle is SE of Brakenwall Village.

Nat Pagle will ask you to catch these 4 fish:
Feralas Ahi is found in Feralas (Verdantis River).
Savage Coast Blue Sailfin is found in Stranglethorn Vale (The Savage Coast).
Sar'theris Striker is found in Desolace (Sar'theris Strand).
Misty Reed Mahi Mahi. is found in Swamp of Sorrows (Misty Reed Strand).

Step By Step Artisan Fishing Guide For Horde:

1. After speaking to Nat, run back to Brakenwall Village.
2. Flight to Thunderbluff.
3. Flight to Shadow Prey Village.
4. Fish in the ocean in Sar'theris Strand south of Shadow Prey Village for the Sar'theris Striker. It took me about 30 casts to catch him!
5. Flight to Thunderbluff.
6. Flight to Camp Mojache.
7. Run west down the road until you reach a bridge running over Verdantis River. The bridge area is safe to fish. Got the Feralas Ahi on the first cast!
8. Flight to Thunderbluff.
9. Flight to Orgrimmar.
10. Sail Ship to Grom'Gol.
11. Run south down the coast until you reach The Savage Coast. I got the Savage Coast Blue Sailfin on my 13th cast!
12. Flight to Stonard.
13. Run east until you reach the ocean waters of the Misty Reed Strand. I got the Misty Reed Mahi Mahi on the 22nd cast at 90.73.
14. Time to head Back to Nat Pagle!
15. Flight to Grom'Gol
16. Sail Ship to Ogrimmar
17. Flight to Brakenwall Village
18. Run SE to 58.59.

 

Step By Step Artisan Fishing Guide For Alliance:

1. After speaking to Nat, run back to Theramore Isle.
2. Flight to Nijel's Point. Follow the road South then West until you reach the ocean waters of Sar'theris Strand. It took me about 30 casts to catch him!
3. Flight to Theramore Isle.
4. Flight to Thalanaar.
5. Flight to Feathermoon Stonghold.
6. Take ship accros the water.
7. Run along the road heading east until you reach a bridge that runs over Verdantis River. The bridge area is safe to fish. Got the Feralas Ahi on the first cast!
8. Flight to Auberdine.
9. Ship to Wetlands, Menthil Harbor.
10. Flight to Ironforge.
11. Flight to Stormwind.
12. Flight to Booty Bay.
13. Run north-west along the coast until you reach The Savage Coast. I got the Savage Coast Blue Sailfin on my 13th cast!
14. Flight to Darkshire.
15. Flight to Nethergarde Keep.
16. Run west then north into the Swamp of Sorrows. Then run east until you reach the ocean waters of the Misty Reed Strand. I got the Misty Reed Mahi Mahi on the 22nd cast at 90.73.
17. Time to head Back to Nat Pagle!
18. Flight to Stormwind.
19. Flight to Ironforge.
20. Flight to Menthil Harbor
21. Sail to Theramore Isle
22. Swim south-west to 58.59.
